Woodchester - An Historic Gem, An Escape Into Nature

Tucked away just steps from the Silver Bridge in Downtown Bracebridge lies the historic Woodchester, an octagonal home rich in history, elegance and character. The Woodchester grounds and adjacent parkland boast some of the oldest growth in Bracebridge and a stroll through the dense tree canopy makes for a peaceful escape into nature.

Woodchester

Take a short hike up Entrance Drive from the Bracebridge Falls and you will find yourself at Woodchester, one of the oldest and most entrancing homes in Bracebridge. The octagonal house sits on approximately 10 acres of serene property overlooking the Muskoka River, the falls, and the iconic Silver Bridge.

It has been over 100 years since the Bird Family first moved into Woodchester. Today, The Town of Bracebridge invites the community to use the historic and unique, octagonal home as a charming event space, suitable for small events under 40 attendees.

The surrounding parkland is dotted with park benches and picnic tables, enhanced historic light posts, the Storybook Trail and the newest addition to the property, the observation deck. The grounds are maintained on a seasonal basis through Spring, Summer and Fall.

The Storybook Trail

Winding through the parkland adjacent to Woodchester is the Storybook Trail. Currently the trail features the story “Penny and the Trail of Wonders” by author Courtney Murrell and illustrated by Kristin Wright, two local Bracebridge artists who created the story with their hometown in mind. The enchanted trail weaves through the trees, lined with storyboards that take you on the adventure of Penny and her dog Ralph.

Join in the adventure, pause to take in the scenery and sounds of the forest, and take a moment to reflect just as Penny does. The story panels also offer some interactive suggestions for young naturalists looking to further explore the forest around them.

The Observation Deck

As you make your way through the Storybook Trail, you will come to the newest addition to the property, the observation deck. Positioned to overlook the Muskoka River, the newly constructed observation deck creates a peaceful space for visitors to enjoy a new viewpoint and perspective of Downtown Bracebridge, and further showcases the old-growth forest. The octagonal shape draws inspiration from Woodchester itself and provides plenty of space to view the abundance of surrounding nature.
